Alanis Morissette's lyrics weren't about irony - they were about Sod's law and coincidence. I'm still trying to decide whether or not it's ironic that a song about irony wasn't actually a song about irony. It might be stretching things a little too far to think that that was ultimately her point. However, here's something that certainly is.

They are ironic, in certain circumstances.
If you needed a knife to stab the bastard who keeps giving you spoons, that's ironic. If you just needed it to open a tin of paint a spoon would work just as well as a knife anyway.
